The Redmond area includes the city of Redmond as well as the unincorporated, census-designated communities of Eagle Crest, Terrebonne, and Crooked River Ranch.
The city of Redmond (el. 3,077′) was established in 1906 around the intersection of what would become HWY 97 and HWY126. It is 26 miles south of Madras on HWY 97, 17 miles northeast of Bend on HWY 97, 20 miles east of Sisters on HWY 126, and 20 miles west of Prineville on HWY 126. In its early years, the town was bolstered by the Oregon Trunk Railway, which opened the town up for merchants and farmers. During World War II a U.S. Army Air base was established at Roberts Field. It is currently the major commuter airport in central Oregon with daily flights serving a number of western states. After Bend, Redmond is central Oregon's second largest populated area.
Eagle Crest (el. 3,000’) is large destination resort and census-designated place six miles east of Redmond. Established in the mid-1980's, it includes a large hotel, conference center, three golf courses, and three major housing developments each with multiple subdivisions. it occupies roughly 1,700 acres on the northern and eastern slopes of the Cline Buttes.
Terrebonne (el. 2,871′) is an unincorporated community and census-designated place that straddles HWY 97 six miles north of Redmond. It is home to the annual 4 Peaks music Festival. Faith, Hope and Charity Vineyards is located west of town and the former destination resort (now gated community) Ranch At The Canyons is to the northeast. The town is probably most known for its close proximity to Smith Rock State Park.
The unincorporated rural area of Crooked River Ranch (el. 2,600′) is located 8 miles northwest of Terrebonne near the Crooked River arm of Lake Billy Chinook. The ranch itself dates back to 1910, however it didn't become a destination resort until 1972. It was re-zoned from recreational to rural/residential in 1980. In 1992, the site was re-zoned once more, this time as a residential subdivision.
