Central Oregon Ranch Communities

Several large ranches in central Oregon have been transformed into residential communities while retaining some or most of their original ranch functions. While these ranches may lack some of amenities of the larger resorts, they often afford a quieter, more private lifestyle. As with the larger resorts, each ranch has its own identity and flavor.

 

Vandevert Ranch (est. 1989)

Vandervert Ranch (el. 4,200') is located along the southern border of Sunriver with which it shares the 97707 zip code. The ranch was originally homesteaded in 1892 by William Plutarch Vandevert and predates the founding of both Bend and Deschutes County. The Vandevert family owned the ranch up to the 1980’s. In 1988 Jim and Carol Gardner bought the ranch, restored the existing homestead, and developed the ranch as a high-end gated community. Spread over 400 acres along both banks of the Little Deschutes River, Vandevert Ranch maintains a log home theme and claims the greatest concentration of log homes of any community in the west.

Ranch At The Canyons (est. 2000)

Ranch At The Canyons (el. 2,800’) is located a few miles northeast of Terrebonne - with which is shares the 97760 zip code. The 1,700 acre ranch was adapted to a private residential community in the late 1990's by developers Jim Gardner and Mick Humpreys. The original vision was to create an exclusive destination resort with a Tuscan architectural theme around a golf course. That plan was altered by state land use laws which prohibited some resort uses (including the golf course) within certain limits of agricultural uses. The 2008 recession saw a change in ownership and, after a few years, a renewed level of activity and interest in the ranch. The current plan consists of 46 homesites (4 acres to 13.75 acres), combined with 600 acres of irrigated farmland and 500 acres of protected land spread over both sides of the Crooked River and zoned for conservation under the auspices of the Deschutes Land Basin Trust. In addition to homes and ranch structures already constructed, the ranch also includes a clubhouse, stables building, and Monkey Face Vineyards. Ranch At The Canyons maintains a Tuscan architectural design theme that is reinforced by the CCRs and design review board. In full disclosure, as an architect I was involved with the design of the Tuscan Stables, which were intended to serve as an example of the sort of architecture (materials, style, construction, etc.) for future homes on the ranch.

Deschutes River Ranch (est. 2003)

Deschutes River Ranch (el. 3,200') is located midway between Bend and Redmond off of the Old Bend Redmond HWY and is a part of the 97703 zip code.  The ranch covers 450 acres across both sides of the Deschutes River.  Adapted to include single-family homes in 2003, the ranch currently has around forty home sites with a number of homes built upon them to date. The size of the ranch affords hiking, bicycling, and horseback riding opportunities. In addition, a common area pavilion is open to all home owner association members for family events (i.e. reunions, wedding receptions, etc.).
